Configure_Pidgin_for_Zimbra

Zimbra 5 incorporates Openfire/Jive's Jabber server allowing not just instant messaging via the web client, but Jabber clients such as iChat, Pidgin and others, whether on a desktop, notebook or handheld.

Open-source Pidgin (Gaim) provides a capable and low-cost Jabber client for Linux and Windows users. Since the Mac already has free Jabber clients in iChat and Adium, we have tested Windows users with Pidgin as follows:
  1. Download and install Pidgin from their web site.
  2. Upon install it will ask you to set up accounts. Conversely you can just use Accounts > Manage.
  3. Use the settings as indicated in these screen shots:

  • Note that "Screen name" is the user's name before the @ symbol. "Domain" is the portion after the @ symbol. If you have several domains, you can chat across them as we have tested.
  • We have not researched what 'Resource' is, and and have left it blank. It seems to revert to 'Home' anyway.
  • We also have not tried "New mail notifications' in our tests.

  • Since Jabber on iChat seems to prioritize port 5223 for SSL, we tried to force similar on Pidgin as seen above. We then opened this single port on the firewall to allow users Chat without having to VPN in.
  • We don't mess with proxies on our infrastructure. Your methods may vary.
  • "Create this new account" is not recommended, we don't know what it will do and we don't need it anyway.
  • Enable the account and you should be ready to rumble as shown:

Enjoy!
